Albanese Fails the Country - While the Right is Distracted by Itself
By Steven Tripp
“Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake” - Napoleon Bonaparte.
It would not surprise me if this quote is being whispered between members of the Labor Party across the country right now.
Certainly, there is a realignment taking place on the right side of politics, with two things happening at the same time.
Firstly, the Liberal Party has imploded. Years of factional infighting and ignoring their own members has eroded the trust their supporters once had for the party.
Former long-time Victorian Liberal MP, Bernie Finn, recently described the Liberals as a party “hell-bent on self-destruction”, and added, “They hate each other more than they hate the Labor Party”.
“When you get a party that regards the important election as the State Council election; where the internal elections of the party are held; when that takes precedence over a Federal election, or a State election, you’ve got no hope”, he went on to say.
The second thing is the rise of One Nation. Recent polling indicates a surge in support for the party and the South Australian State election proved the polls are accurate, as One Nation picked up 4 House of Assembly seats and 3 in the Legislative Council.
This has sparked a response from other right-wing parties, including the Liberal Party, who seem desperate to halt the momentum One Nation has achieved.
“They’re trolling through everything to actually make us sound like the worst party”, One Nation leader Pauline Hanson said to Chris Kenny on April 15.
“You have no idea what the hell’s happening to me on a daily basis, not from the Labor Party, from the Coalition and the media.”
Meanwhile, other right-wing parties have taken aim, including Gerard Rennick of People First. In a March 30 post on X, Rennick wrote of Pauline Hanson, “One Nation was on 5% last year. The critical mass you refer to is saturation main stream media designed to brainwash you into thinking she is the solution. She isn’t - she’s just a puppet of the establishment”.
Many may claim that this is just politics and politicians throw barbs in all directions. I would argue that any focus on the Liberals or One Nation is a distraction away from the real problem in this country - Labor Governments, both State and Federal.
Particularly, the Albanese Government.
Alarmingly the consequences of Albanese’s Government are now manifesting in the lives of everyday Australians.
Headline CPI inflation is 3.7%, with the Reserve Bank expecting it to peak around 4.2% by mid-2026. This is abnormally high, significantly above the long-term average of 2.5%.
Of course, the Ukraine and Iran wars will be blamed, but undoubtedly inflation is being fuelled by the Government's reckless spending.
KPMG wrote in their 2025 Federal budget analysis, “Growth in Government spending continues to outpace aggregate GDP growth, resulting in public sector spending as a proportion of GDP peaking at 28.5 percent next financial year; up from 24.1 percent in 2018-19.”
Alarming, the budget also declared $85 billion of ‘off-budget’ spending.
With no accountability for the Government’s reckless spending, it is homeowners who will be inflicted with the double whammy of higher interest rates as a result. The flow on from that is even higher rents.
Inflation is not the limit of our dire economic situation as recent data from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has revealed that Australia recorded the steepest decline in real household disposable income among all other developed nations.
According to the latest quarterly national accounts and OECD benchmarks, real per capita household disposable income fell by 1.8% in Australia in 2024. This places Australia as the only OECD ranked country that saw declines in both 2023 and 2024.
In fact, the data only adds to a prolonged slump, with real per capita household disposable incomes plummeting around 8% from their mid-2022 peak according to data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).
If our worsening economy was not bad enough, further failures of Labor continue to impact everyday Australians.
Albanese broke his promise of a $275 reduction in power bills and instead we have seen a substantial increase in electricity prices since Labor took power. In the 12 months to February 2026 alone, electricity costs rose 37%.
Meanwhile, Chris Bowen recklessly carpets our precious Australian landscape and surrounding communities with solar panels, wind turbines and high-voltage transmission lines.
Taxpayers have also endured an expenses scandal involving ministerial travel entitlements, involving Anika Wells, Michelle Rowland and Don Farrell - with the Government twice delaying a review.
Albanese and Tony Burke were accused of misleading the public with the exposure of an ISIS brides cover-up. Sky News host Sharri Markson claimed Minister Burke wanted the entire matter “kept out of the media”.
Then there was the Bondi terror attack which exposed Albanese for what he really is - weak, cowardly and ineffectual. Those present in Bondi expressed their anger by booing him upon his arrival to a vigil.
Currently the big topic is fuel security. We should have at least 90-days’ worth of fuel in this country - but the Albanese Government cannot even manage that.
In his National Address, Albanese's response was typical Labor - throw handouts left, right and centre, instead of addressing the root cause - we should be protecting our fuel security by holding more in reserve, while at the same time boosting onshore refineries and exploring our own reserves.
Albanese has enjoyed an easy ride through his term in Government, with the Liberal opposition almost non-existent. The Dutton election campaign crashed and burned and Sussan Ley did not even last a year as leader.
This is despite there being clear evidence of failure by the Labor Government.
It is time for the adults on the right-side of politics to stop bickering with themselves and instead begin to relentlessly dismantle Labor's destructive grip on power in Australia.
